Desktop Computer: A computer small enough to fit a place for one person. Workstation: A work or office are assigned to one person, this place contains a computer or some other electronic device. Laptop: A computer that is usually battery-powered microcomputer small enough to fit on a lap. Supercomputer: A very fast, powerful mainframe computer, used in advanced military and scientific applications. Mainframe: A large computer, often the hub of a system supporting many users. Server: A computer program that supplies data or resources to other computers on a network. PDA/Handheld: A Personal Digital Assistant. A mobile device that can be used to store information. Viruses Boot sector virus: A boot sector virus is a virus that infects the first sector. File virus: A virus that infects executable files by inserting their code into it. When the file is opened it infects the computer. Macro virus: A virus that is encoded in macro and put in an application that supports macro languages. When the file is opened the macro activates. Trojan Horse: A virus that pretends to be a certain application but is really a virus. Time Bomb: A virus that activates at a certain time. When it activates it opens up lots of windows and uses up all the ram. Worm: A sub-virus that can transfer from computer to computer with the aid of someone. It can transfer by information transports on your computer. Logic Bomb: A Logic Bomb is a virus that stays dormant until a certain logic program is activated or a certain time. Attachments: A virus that is attached to an email and when the attachment is opened the virus is let loose. Virus Prevention: Many use antivirus software to prevent viruses. These detect and remove malware. Networks Network: A network is something that other computers can connect to. This allows the computer to use the computer power from the network. File Server: A computer that provides shared disk access through a network and can be accessed by another computer on the network. LAN: A computer network that connects computers in a limited area. It could in an office, school or home. Wan: A WAN is a network is broadcast in a large area. I IP Address: An IP Address is the identifier on a network. An IP Address is a 32-bit numeric address written as four separate numbers. |
